The work of grace, when it is first wrought, has the name “vocation” or “calling.” What is it for a man to be called? “Give diligence to make your calling and election sure.” To be called is this: whereas before you were altogether digging and delving in the earth and seeking for your happiness in the world, it pleased God to make you hear a voice behind you, calling you and telling you, “O poor soul, your happiness is not here. There are other things in which the Chief Good consists. …” Here’s the first work of grace. And the soul answers unto this call of God and says, “Lord, I come.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
