{"id":2574,"date":"2017-11-20T23:43:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T21:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/w3.sonofcarey.com\/?p=2574"},"modified":"2017-11-20T23:43:00","modified_gmt":"2017-11-20T21:43:00","slug":"justification-by-faith-is-not-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sonofcarey.com\/?p=2574","title":{"rendered":"Justification by Faith is Not Enough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">The glorious truth of justification by faith is being rightly emphasized and popularized today by movements such as <a href=\"http:\/\/t4g.org\/\">Together for the Gospel<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/\">The Gospel Coalition<\/a>, and in southern Africa, <a href=\"http:\/\/sola5.org\/\">Sola 5<\/a>, an association to which I am glad to belong. In Peter\u2019s first epistle, you could find support for this kind of ministry several times. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">\u2026knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19 but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">the blood<\/i> of Christ. 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">1 Peter 1:18-21<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">\u00a0\u2026and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.<br \/>\n1 Peter 2:24 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">For Christ also died for sins once for all, <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">the<\/i> just for <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">the<\/i> unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;<br \/>\n1 Peter 3:18<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">When Peter writes again to this same group of believers just before his death, his greeting is baptized and drips with gospel glory. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:<br \/>\n2 Peter 1:1 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Peter loves the gospel, but in his second epistle he surprises those of us who have sympathy for centering our lives on the gospel. The second epistle deals broadly with Christian growth\u2014traveling on the road to Heaven more so than entering at the gate, fighting with sin more so than enlisting in Christ\u2019s army, the process of a child\u2019s growth more so than the moment of a baby\u2019s birth, sanctification more than justification. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">It is not hard to see Peter\u2019s focus on Christian growth in the second letter: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">2 Peter 1:2-4<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">\u2022 One long sentence.<br \/>\n\u2022 How may we find great spiritual blessings like Christian grace and peace?<br \/>\n\u2022 These come from theology\u2014a knowledge of God (1:2, 3, 4).<br \/>\n\u2022 These promises help us to \u201cescape the corruption that is in the world.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022 These words describe a process of growth and change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">2 Peter 1:5-11<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">\u2022 With all your strength add these 7 virtues on to your faith.<br \/>\n\u2022 Work, work, work\u2014the language of synergism, we are cooperating with God.<br \/>\n\u2022 Work hard to make sure that you have been called and chosen (1:10).<br \/>\n\u2022 By hard work you can expect entrance into God\u2019s kingdom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">At the end of the letter, the last verse he writes before his crucifixion proves what was on his mind. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">\u2026but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">be<\/i> the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.<br \/>\n2 Peter 3:18<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">What is most remarkable though is how strongly Peter feels about Christian growth or fighting with our sin in order to become like Christ. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Therefore, I will always be ready to remind you of <b>these things<\/b>, even though you <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">already<\/i> know <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">them<\/i>, and have been established in the truth which is present with <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">you.<\/i><br \/>\n2 Peter 1:12<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Peter always reminds them of the necessity and the means and the results of Christian growth. Even though they have already been taught, he is going to keep on pressing these same points to them. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">I consider it right, as long as I am in this <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">earthly<\/i> dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder, 14 knowing that the laying aside of my <i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">earthly<\/i> dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.<br \/>\n2 Peter 1:13-14 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Peter: \u201cMy brothers, this is what you will get whenever I have a platform.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Christians: \u201cAren\u2019t you always talking about this?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">Peter: \u201cThis will be my main theme until I die. Write it on my tombstone.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">He was willing to repeat this one section of God\u2019s truth so often that after he was dead and gone, none of them would ever forget what he constantly talked about. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">And I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call <b>these things<\/b> to mind.<br \/>\n2 Peter 1:15<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">The phrase \u201cthese things\u201d is found 5 times in chapter one (1:8, 9, 10, 12, and 15) and it is implied in verse 11. It refers to working hard to add the virtues to your faith. What are these things? Christian growth or sanctification or holiness. Peter has a fixation that has become his own personal, doctrinal emphasis. He gives us an inspired example of a pastor who chooses a certain great theme to mark his life and ministry. Paul\u2019s life was marked by justification by faith and missions. John\u2019s life was marked by love. At least in the second epistle, Peter closes his life with an emphasis on true, Biblical holiness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"mso-bidi-font-size: 9.0pt;\">These verses make me think that Peter would not have joined a gospel-centered movement because he thought justification was necessary, but not sufficient.
